Poker is a game where players use cards and chips to make bets. The game has many different rules and variations, but the basic principle is to try and make the best hand possible at the end of the game.
The game begins with each player being dealt five cards, face down. They then place an ante, which is an amount of money they can use to bet during the game. Then, they can discard from one to several cards to improve their hand.
During betting, players can also “fold,” which means they lose their bet and do not have to bet again. However, they still have to show their cards if they want to win the hand.
In poker, each hand is ranked according to its value, with the highest card winning. These include:
High card
The highest card in the hand is valued first, followed by a pair of cards, which are two cards with the same number. The second highest pair wins if there is a tie.
Two pairs of the same rank
A pair of twos is considered a low pair, whereas a pair of fives is a high pair.
Three of a kind
A three-of-a-kind is a five-card hand that includes three cards with the same rank and two other cards of different ranks.
Straight
A straight is a five-card hand that starts with the highest card, regardless of suit.
Flush
A flush is a five-card hand that contains all the same cards in sequence.
