Poker is a card game in which players compete to form the highest ranking hand based on rules and betting. The winner of each hand wins the pot, which is the total amount of chips bet in that hand.
The game is played with a standard 52-card deck with one or two jokers. Players place an initial bet, called the ante, before being dealt cards. Once each player has placed their ante, they may raise or fold based on their own cards and the community cards.
Each hand consists of five cards. The value of a hand is in direct relation to its mathematical frequency, the more rare the hand, the higher it ranks. Players can also bluff, betting that they have a good hand when in fact they do not, in order to force opponents with inferior hands to call their bets.
In most games, one person is designated to deal the cards and act as the dealer. This person shuffles the cards, deals them to each player in turn and then passes the reshuffled deck to the next player to deal.
Each player must place their bet (called a contribution) into the pot in a set order, usually clockwise. After the first betting interval, called the pre-flop, three community cards are dealt face up to the center of the table, and the betting again begins. If you have a strong hand, say “raise,” so that weaker hands will be forced to call your bet and increase the value of the pot.
