Poker is a card game in which players try to obtain the best possible hand. The game is played with a standard deck of 52 cards. Players may bet, bluff, or discard cards.
Normally, the game starts with all the players facing each other. The player on the left is the first to act. This player is the one who starts the betting round.
In poker, the highest hand wins the pot. A hand with five cards of the same suit is called a straight flush. Depending on the variant, a player may have a “wild” card or a joker.
Some games require a player to place an ante. An ante is a small bet. It is usually a nickel into the pot.
During the first round of betting, each player puts in the same number of chips. When two or more players have the same highest hand, the high card breaks ties.
Each player then shows their cards, which may be face up or face down. Those showing face up are said to be “drawing”. They can then replace their hand by revealing another card.
After the first round of betting, a second betting interval is started. During this interval, the player to the left of the big blind is the first to act. He can either raise or check.
A player who folds is said to “drop”. He no longer has a chance to compete for the pot.
